Bustin' Loose With The Moose 2005 Tour - Sunday, Jul 10th, 2005
Heeeeere is the latest road update... Tour of Alaska. My oh my how the summer sun does shine in Alaska. It feels a bit strange to get done playing a show and walk outside into what feels like twilight sun... check my watch and see that it's 3am.

We've played in Anchorage last night at Humpy's. That was one crowd ready to party! Instant party. Just add music. That's what our job description is sometimes. Everyone from the Hostel we're staying at (The Spenard Hostel) came on down to check out the show... I guess you could say there was a "hostel take over" at Humpy's last night.

There was almost a riot in the bar when the management cut our set off at 12:30am to make room for a DJ to take over.

Tonight we head back to Girdwood. Our first show in Girdwood a couple nights ago was a real good time. Good people and food there at Maxines.

Bustin' Loose with the Moose 2005 part II - Tuesday, Jul 12th, 2005
Oh my oh my... where has the night time darkness gone? It's no where to be found here.

We played a 2nd night in Girdwood. Several folks from Anchorage drove down for the show. We had yet another Hostel Take Over! I'm telling you, those Hostel folks are something else!

Last night we played at the Salmon Bake just outside the entrance to Denali National Park. It was pretty crazy since it was "Prom Night" complete with bearded men dressed in drag. Griff and I didn't have a prom date, but we did supply a foot stompin' good time for the happy prom kids.

When we were walking back to our cabin at 3:30 in the morning, the sky was as bright as a 6am morning back home.

We had a great hike today. I almost walked right into a momma moose... luckily she was more interested in eating foliage next to the trail than in charging me. Since she obviously felt that the trail belongs to her, and I was a rude interuption to her dinner plans, I decided to bushwack around her. Ah traveling in Alaska.

See you next time.

Dylan

Bustin Loose with the Moose 2005 part III - Tuesday, Jul 19th, 2005
After 3 fun filled nights of rockin out the Salmon Bake, we were invited to play the next night at a bar "just 2 1/2 beers down the highway" in Cantwell. This sounded like a fine idea, so we packed up our gear and headed on down the road. The bar we played at (The Longhorn) is an old road house a couple miles off the main highway. The power went out a couple times... so rather than play our usual concert we decided to go without amplification... pure acoustic. I borrowed a guitar from one of the locals, and Griff and I played fiddle tunes for the rest of the night.

The next night was in Fairbanks at the Marlin. We arrived a little late, so there was a tense moment at first... but once we warmed the room up with a tune everything was all good. The fine folks at the Marlin were a joy to play for... so fun that we stayed around until about 4:30am hanging out and chatting. Of course this is not the advised way to prepare for the long drive we had the next day to Palmer... but since when does the Powerhouse Duo do anything the advised way?

We played at the Vagabond Blues in Palmer. We were surprised by the crowd of folks that drove from all over to check us out. We made some fine friends that work for a rafting company... and the next day we found ourselves rafting with them down the Matanuska River. What a way to start the day! You know you're in for a good time when your guide introduces himself by saying "Hi, my name's Cassidy and I'm crazy!"

Our final show was at the Great Bear Brewery in Wasilla. Good people all around. All in all we had a great time in Alaska... See you again soon.

Dylan-Thomas Vance and Griff Bear, Live at Biddy McGraws CD - Friday, Dec 17th, 2004
Griff Bear and Dylan-Thomas Vance are tickled and energized to announce the release of their long awaited "Live at Biddy McGraws" CD. The CD is available in stores nation wide (look in the "Rock" section), and online at CD Baby

Thanks to Biddy's for putting up the seed money for this project, and thanks to a super fan in California for putting up the money to finish it. It's been a true labor of love and we think you will love it too!

Bustin Loose with the Moose, Alaska Tour Part IV - Tuesday, Sep 28th, 2004
Good Girdwood!

Baaaack in the Girdweed town. It's a Sunday. People are mellow after the weekend festivities. The word got out around town since the last show here... more people come to this show. A few of them are people that saw me elsewhere in the state and are coming around for seconds. The vibe is real cool. There are couches set up right in front of the stage, and candles everywhere. Everyone is moving a bit slower tonight but the smiles and appreciation is abundant. I really enjoyed playing this show.

I must say that every person I met that lives year round in Alaska was really friendly and welcoming. Thank you Alaska! See you in the summer.

Bustin Loose With the Moose Alaska Tour, 2004 Part III - Sunday, Sep 26th, 2004
I wonder if the spirit of the moose head on the wall cares about the sailors hat placed upon its' head. Probably no more than the skinned Polar Bear on the wall or the Musk Ox. Once you die all bodily cares go away, right?

The last two shows have been more fun than an eighth of psychodelic mushrooms in a rain forest.

Last night in Fairbanks began with college kids dancing during the first song, and they were there all the way through the last song. The kids are alright. Someone's got to introduce them to Mississippi Fred McDowell and John Prine. It may as well be me.

Tonight was a crazy good night at the Totem Inn in Healy, Alaska. All the locals getting loco. The married mother out for her one night of the year, flirting with drunk mumbling Joe shmoe while backing that ass up to grind a bit with a local gay man (good safe fun, she tells me... and who can blame her?) No Northern Lights tonight, but there was something special in the air.

Loose Moose Alaska tour part II - Thursday, Sep 23rd, 2004
One lesson I've learned as an entertainer over the years is never attempt to put on a show during Monday night football. To come between a sport fan and their beloved game makes you as beloved as the single mosquito in the tent buzzing around your ear while you're trying to sleep... and you're just as likely to get slapped.

My 1st Anchorage gig was originally scheduled during the usual Monday night football time... but alas we decided it was best to not risk bodily harm for the arts in this case. I did however come back later that night and play a few tunes for the boozed up crowd at Humpy's. Why is the bar named Humpy's? After the hump back whale? Because many young people hope to meet someone for humping at the bar? Perhaps both.

The next show (number 4 on this tour for those of you keeping count) was at Organic Oasis in Anchorage. The only establishment that serves tofu in Anchorage (perhaps the only one in the state?). A health conscious joint with friendly folks. Good times good times. I moaned some blues, told some jokes that fell flat, and a lady missing several teeth told me about her life as a traveling musician. I thought she was the most unpretentious and cool person there.

Alaska Tour 2004... Bustin' Loose with the Moose Tour - Sunday, Sep 19th, 2004
Here I am riding the back of my old guitar around Alaska. Floating into villages and setting up in the tavern and getting loco with the locals. Talkeetna was my first stop.

The sign at the edge of town sais "Welcome to downtown Talkeetna" The other edge of town is found at the end of the block. I played somewhere in between at the Fairview Inn.

There isn't a cop within 75 miles of this place, so the bar gets to a roiling boil like an old man's blood when he sees his neigbors 18 year old grandaughter nude sunbathing in the back yard. Much dancing was done by the pretty ladies and the bearded men in overalls did some good stomping too.

One of the locals put some Alaskan Thunderf*** goggles on me and I saw the Northern Lights put on a show. Purple haze sky. Jimi Hendrix my brother, I know what you mean.

Show number two was at Maxine's in Girdwood. The locals refer to Girdwood as "Girdweed" and "Goodweed". It's a ski resort down the fjord just south of Anchorage... complete with the hip and hippie dip culture found in all American ski resort towns. Good people sipping wine and taking in the tunes quite casually.

Recent Press from the Willamette Week in Portland, OR - Thursday, Jul 8th, 2004
When Dylan-Thomas Vance moved from Montana to Portland, it sounds like he took a chunk of the open country with him. Alternately gruff-voiced and campfire-quiet, Vance's music is a genuine sawdust-'n'-dirt go at finger-picked roots music and lap-steel country blues. Following Cowboy Soul and Country Blues Vol. 1 and last year's Bittersweet, Vance's live act is even more down-home with the recent addition of fiddler Grif Bear to the mix. (RS)

Lovely fans in Salem. - Tuesday, Jun 15th, 2004

So there I was in the middle of my set at Lefty's in Salem, I look up and see a row of women wearing t-shirts that spell out, "We Love Dylan-Thomas Vance." Thanks to these ladies for their creative and fun way of expressing their support. Thanks to Joel Risner for capturing one of my favorite gig memories of all time!

Random notes - Wednesday, Jun 2nd, 2004
Griff and I are almost done mixing our "Live at Biddy's" album and you can listen to some of the rough tracks on my downloads page, and even more on Griff's website. We're thrilled with the way it's all coming together - and so appreciative of Biddy's support and the support of all of our fans who came down to Biddy's for those live recordings.

At the end of the month I'll be embarking on yet another California tour... but this time Griff's coming with me - yeee haaaw! I can't wait to unleash some rippin' Griff Bear fiddle on my California audiences! (And have someone to share the driving!)

And speaking of my California tour: one of my Fresno fans, and fellow musician, Mallory Moad, has offered to help spread the word about my show and poster Fresno for me! Check out Mallory's website, she does some really cool performance and audience-interactive art. YOU ROCK MALLORY!!!

Another cool thing happened to me recently: Eric Bohne of Diggabone, with whom I'll be performing on July 30th, asked me to record some guitar on a song that he's been invited to include in the Acoustic Slam CD - which is a really cool project with some amazing local talent including Billy Kennedy, Jim Brunberg (who's contributing a song and mastering the album, and The Gypsy Moths, to name a few. Check out the Acoustic Slam website for more info and to listen to the rough tracks... that were all recorded at Griff's studio.

Finally one last bit of recording news... I'm honored to have collaborated and recorded a track for the Deep Roots 7 CD. This is a really cool and creative Reynolds Highschool annual project. Check it out.

See you out there!

Back from the road - Friday, Feb 6th, 2004
This last tour was a great success. Double the attendance at all the venues I had played at previously, and I was well received at all the new venues.

The highlight of my tour was opening a sold out show for Grammy winning slide guitarist Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings. I've got a picture of Roy and I hanging out. Definately going in my all time favorite photos collection.

Here is what the San Francisco Examiner has written for my debut in the city:

Portland-based Dylan-Thomas Vance's lap slide guitar playing and proficiency with a heartbroken, drink-nursing lyric has been called everything from innovative to masterful.

His command of the traditional Americana/roots style is apparent, but his noted specialty is taking that tradition and tweaking it ever so slightly and respectfully, infusing his bluesy sound with a subtle jazz undercurrent. So it's no wonder that Vance's sophomore CD, "Bittersweet," was one of indie-retailer CD Baby's biggest sellers for 2003 and that the Minnesota native is a favorite on the national blues circuit. Two Louies review of Bittersweet - Monday, Nov 10th, 2003
Portland's longest running music publication, Two Louies Magazine had this to say about Dylan-Thomas Vance's 2nd solo album:

"Here, he has burst from his embryonic shell, fully formed, as a musical monster completely unto himself; the depth and complexity of which have only slightly been touched upon thus far."

and

"...today Dylan is a true rising star in his own right, rapidly developing with astounding brevity and concision, his own highly individualized guitar style and unique vocal delivery, evidence of which is everywhere to be found here."

Bill Wence Rocks! - Tuesday, Apr 19th, 2005
Earlier this year we hired Bill Wence to promote Live at Biddy McGraw's and we couldn't be happier with the results! If any of you Americana-type musicians out there need a radio promoter, we recommend you give Bill a call. A genuinely nice guy who's widely respected (and after more than 25 years in the business, that's saying something), he'll go above and beyond your expections and give you the kind of personal care that you won't get from the bigger radio promoters. Thanks Bill!
